curator's choice: introduction to selected works
"The work of Jenny Kitchener is complex and detailed in both its technical realization and inherent themes. The work ‘Totem’ consists of 16 panels printed by linocut onto woven material. The small-scale prints are intricate and painstaking, demonstrating a considerable skill and technical precision. The themes that the artist confronts are equally complex. A narrative cycle is built from symbols that are repeated with no identifiable beginning or end. ‘Totem’ successfully evokes a sense of place and indicates an appreciation of the rich, natural environment in which Kitchener creates her work." Philip Bacon AM, August 2007biography
Born Sydney, 1955.

artist profile
Jenny Kitchener was born in Sydney in 1955 and spent her childhood in close proximity to the Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park. Here she developed a great love of nature and of the Australian bush. She moved to the North Coast in 1980 where she lives on a property at Afterlee, west of Kyogle.
Personal reflections of family and place inform and provide the subject matter of much of Jenny's work. Inspiration is drawn from both the domestic realm of the home and from the beauty of the natural environment. Her current work is concerned with exploring personal issues concerned with the notions of change and memory in relation to place and to the passing of time.
Jenny has held six solo shows since 1992, and has been very active in exhibiting in both local and national exhibitions over the past 15 years. Collections in both Australia and overseas hold examples of her work. Recently she has had work acquired by The National Gallery of Australia. As a teacher she has a longstanding association with the Printmaking Studio at Southern Cross University and in the Fine Arts Department of The North Coast Institute of TAFE.
