artist profile
Recycle, reuse , refine, my medium shapes my themes as much as theme controls my work. Predominantly I draw from myth, past and present.I enjoy representing the fantastic as well as the fact and mainly where the two join.
"Dans work is unpretentious and his approach is pragmatic as well as poetic, his work is not bound by traditional themes or labels"
Ken Newlan DipAD ATC curator Montgomery sculpture trust.
What started as a utilisation of a wasted resource and highlighting a little known aesthetic often becomes much more, an ecological premise; with each viewer bringing their own subjective preconceptions of dwindling global resources - interpretations of carbon crisis paralleled with use of recycled materials.
The Bonnet Balls series are made from car bonnet undercarriages - a part of a car that people rarely see and even panel beaters throw away. Car bonnets display a functional and accidental aesthetic. As a sculptural material they display a dramatic random geometry, and distinct but subjugated indications of their original purpose. This is something I have often admired…have you ever opened your car’s bonnet to appreciate the glorious forms presented?
