Jules Ober

biography

Jules Ober is a photographer who has developed a highly trained eye for images over 20 years working between Australia and Europe across platforms as diverse as fine art printmaking, fashion, film and multimedia.

Her work as a documentary photographer has involved relationships with clients such as Kenzo Perfume and Universal music, and has seen her photographs published in magazines such as Vogue (Australia), Elle (Russia) and L’Express (France).

In 2005, she developed a more personal approach to her work.
For the first time she combined her major influences : the profound awareness and awe of nature imprinted on her as an Australian, and her passion for design and printmaking developed during years of living and working in Europe.

The result was the development of WALLCANDY - a personal exhibition of abstract landscapes which was displayed at the Tweed River Art Gallery and quickly found an application in the domain of design and architecture.

In 2006 she was commissioned by interior architects Pike Withers to create a series of images for and from the Lizard Island Resort, along with several other boutique hotels.
Her work for the Lizard Island Resort resulted in an exhibition at the Four Points Sheraton gallery in Sydney in September 2006.

Jules continues to explore all the possibilities of the new digital printmaking technologies as she develops working partnerships with local and international designers and architects to integrate photography as a design element in the creation of contemporary interiors.

Jules is also available for assignments and commissioned work.

artist profile

I am a photographic artist working in the digital medium.

Inspired by Frank Lloyd Wrights’ principles of organic architecture and my aim is to create a new window to nature – equally valid in the city where the natural elements bring a reminder of what was and to soften an often hard-edged environment, as in the country where my work may bring a new way of looking at the surrounding landscape.

I take details, textures, colours, form and light and paint them together to form a new landscape. Not a formal scene, but a graphic expression capturing the essence of a place.

Rather than using traditional photographic composition where there is a central point of focus that draws the eye in, here the viewer is invited to take a meditative wander across the image which may take unexpected turns. From close-up to wideangle, the images within the image blend to form the journey where anything can become beautiful.

When mounted on the wall, the landscape panel, with its long panoramic format, compliments the lines of contemporary interior architecture, rather than filling a wall space. The negative space around the panel allows it to breathe and empowers the image, drawing the viewer in, whilst perhaps then leading the eye to a particular architectural feature. The panel works in harmony with its environment, bringing a sense of soul.

“The re-emergence of organic design represents a new freedom of thought; an expression of hope for the future.”
David Pearson - New Organic Architecture, The Breaking Wave

"Man can only experience true harmony of soul where what his soul knows to be its most valuable thoughts, feelings and impulses are mirrored for his senses in the forms, colours and, so on, of his surroundings."
Rudolph Steiner
